Chilean Telecom Backbone Fiber Optic Cable Distribution

Chile's telecom backbone is expanding through domestic fiber networks and international subsea cables, including the Humboldt Cable linking South America directly to the Asia-Pacific region.

Domestic Fiber Backbone

Chile's domestic fiber optic infrastructure is anchored by two major projects:

  • Fibra Óptica Austral (FOA): Nearing completion, this network connects the far south of Chile, covering remote regions and enhancing connectivity for local communities and industries .
  • Fibra Óptica Nacional (FON): Planned to complement FOA, this network will extend fiber coverage across central and northern Chile, though construction has not yet started . Together, these networks will deploy approximately 14,000 kilometers of fiber, forming the backbone for national telecommunications, supporting internet, cloud services, and enterprise connectivity .

International Subsea Connectivity

Chile is also investing in transoceanic fiber optic cables to strengthen its global digital presence:

  • Humboldt Cable: A 14,800-kilometer submarine cable connecting Valparaíso, Chile, to Sydney, Australia, with a stop in French Polynesia . This will be the first direct digital link between South America and the Asia-Pacific region, offering a transmission capacity of 144 terabytes per second and a 25-year lifespan . Construction is scheduled to start in 2026, with commercial operations expected in 2027 .
  • The project is a public-private partnership involving Chile's state infrastructure fund Desarrollo País, Google, and the Office of Posts and Telecommunications of French Polynesia . Chile contributes $25 million, while Google and other partners provide the remaining investment, estimated between $300 million and $550 million .
  • The Humboldt Cable also includes potential branches to Antarctica, Juan Fernandez Island, and Easter Island, expanding Chile's strategic connectivity in the Southern Hemisphere .

Regional Fiber Initiatives

Chile is further enhancing regional connectivity through projects like:

  • Argentina-Chile Digital Bridge: A 2,550-kilometer fiber optic route linking Chile and Argentina, improving cross-border digital infrastructure .
  • Participation in other Latin American subsea cable systems, such as SAC-2, which connects Latin America to North America, providing low-latency and diverse routing options .

Strategic Significance

These initiatives position Chile as a digital hub for Latin America, enabling:

  • Direct access to Asia-Pacific markets without routing through North America .
  • Enhanced internet speeds, reliability, and redundancy for domestic and regional users .
  • Support for cloud computing, banking, mining, and scientific research .
  • Opportunities for international collaboration and investment through public-private partnerships . Chile's combined domestic and international fiber optic projects reflect a strategic effort to modernize its telecom backbone, improve regional connectivity, and establish the country as a key digital gateway between South America and the Asia-Pacific region.
