OBD optical splitter type

An optical splitter (OBD) is a passive optical device that divides a single input optical signal into multiple output signals or combines multiple signals into one, primarily used in fiber-optic networks.

Definition and Function

An optical splitter, also known as a beam splitter or fiber optic splitter, is a passive component in optical communication systems that distributes light from one input fiber to multiple output fibers without requiring electrical power . It enables a single fiber infrastructure to serve multiple users, making it essential in Passive Optical Networks (PON) and Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployments . The device operates based on the physics of light, using waveguides, reflection, refraction, and evanescent field coupling to split or combine optical signals .

Working Principle

The splitter works by guiding light through a network of waveguides or by fusing and tapering fibers together. The incoming optical signal enters the input port, interacts with the internal structure, and is divided among the output ports according to a split ratio (e.g., 1×2, 1×4, 1×32), . Key performance metrics include insertion loss, split ratio, and uniformity of output power .

Types of Optical Splitters

  1. Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Splitters: Made by fusing and tapering two or more fibers, controlling the splitting ratio through fiber twisting and stretching. FBT splitters are cost-effective and suitable for low-channel splits like 1×2 or 1×4 .
  2. Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Splitters: Use photolithography to create waveguides on a quartz substrate, providing uniform splitting and supporting high-channel counts (up to 1×64 or more). PLC splitters are wavelength-insensitive and ideal for large-scale PON networks .

Applications

Optical splitters are widely used in:

  • FTTH/FTTX networks to distribute signals to multiple subscribers .
  • Passive Optical Networks (PON) such as GPON, EPON, and XGS-PON .
  • Telecommunications and data networks for branching and combining optical signals .
  • Optical measurement and biomedical applications, where laser signals are distributed to multiple sensors . In summary, an optical splitter (OBD) is a critical passive device that enables efficient signal distribution in fiber-optic networks, supporting multiple users while maintaining signal integrity and network scalability .
