Precautions for Optical Cable Acceptance

Proper acceptance of optical cables requires careful inspection, handling, and preparation to prevent damage, signal loss, and network downtime.

Inspection and Handling

Before accepting optical cables, inspect the cable for physical damage such as cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections. Ensure that the protective material on the cable reel remains in place until installation to prevent mechanical damage during storage or transport . Avoid sharp bends, twisting, or pinching of the cable, and maintain the minimum bend radius specified in the cable datasheet to prevent fiber breakage or increased attenuation . Check that the installation area is free of sharp objects or debris that could damage the cable .

Cleanliness and Connector Preparation

Cleanliness is critical for optical cable performance. Ensure that cable ends, connectors, and adapters are free from dust, dirt, or other contaminants before connection . Use a specialized fiber optic cleaning kit to remove any debris. Proper cable preparation includes stripping, cleaning, and inspecting the fiber ends, ensuring they are free of nicks or scratches, and cleaving the fiber to produce a clean, flat end face .

Connector Compatibility and Termination

Verify that connectors are compatible with the cable type to avoid signal loss or damage . Follow the manufacturer's instructions for connector termination, using high-quality epoxy or adhesive if required. Improper termination can lead to permanent damage or increased attenuation . Never pull on the connector during installation, and ensure that any bulkhead connections maintain the total attenuation budget .

Mechanical and Environmental Precautions

Do not exceed the maximum pulling tension specified for the cable, and use cable breakaways or swivels to prevent twisting during installation . Avoid crossing cables in a way that creates high-pressure points, and use figure-8 loops when laying cable on surfaces to prevent twisting . Respect the maximum and minimum temperature limits for storage and installation, particularly for LSZH sheathed cables, which are more sensitive to mechanical stress at higher temperatures .

Electrical Safety

Before connecting optical cables to transceivers, discharge any stored voltage by touching the electrical contacts to a grounded surface. Use only transceivers that comply with Class 1 laser safety standards to prevent eye hazards . By following these precautions, optical cables can be accepted and installed safely, ensuring reliable network performance and longevity.
