Function of DAC optical module

DAC optical modules are high-speed connectivity solutions that use copper or optical cables with integrated or separate transceivers to connect network devices, optimized for short- to medium-range data center links.

What is a DAC Optical Module?

A DAC (Direct Attach Cable) is a high-speed cable that connects two network devices directly, typically using shielded Twinax copper wires with transceivers at each end. DACs can be passive (no signal amplification) or active (with built-in electronics to boost signal integrity over longer distances). Passive DACs are highly power-efficient and cost-effective, suitable for short links (up to ~7 meters for 10Gbps, 5 meters for 25Gbps, and ~3 meters for 56Gbps PAM-4 signals), while active DACs extend reach to around 15 meters with slightly higher power consumption and cost .

Optical Modules vs DAC

Optical transceiver modules are separate devices that convert electrical signals to optical signals and connect via fiber cables. Unlike DACs, the optical module and fiber are independent, allowing flexible cable lengths and longer reach (from 100 meters to over 80 km depending on single-mode or multimode fiber). This separation also facilitates easier maintenance and replacement in large data centers . Key differences include:

  • Reach: DACs are limited to short distances, while optical modules can support medium to long distances.
  • Flexibility: Optical modules allow flexible fiber lengths and easy replacement; DACs have fixed lengths.
  • Cost: DACs are cheaper for short links because they eliminate the need for separate transceivers and fiber patching. Optical modules have higher CAPEX per link .
  • Power Consumption: DACs consume less power than optical modules, especially passive DACs (<0.1W), while optical modules require more energy for signal conversion .
  • Deployment: DACs are plug-and-play and easier to deploy in dense racks, whereas optical modules require careful fiber handling and alignment .

Use Cases

  • DAC: Ideal for intra-rack or adjacent rack connections in data centers where cost, power efficiency, and low latency are priorities.
  • Optical Modules: Suitable for longer links, flexible network layouts, and carrier-grade applications where reach and modularity are critical.
  • AOC (Active Optical Cable): Combines features of DAC and optical modules, with integrated transceivers and fiber, offering medium-range connectivity (1–30 meters) with immunity to EMI and easier deployment than separate optical modules .

Summary

DAC optical modules provide a cost-effective, low-power solution for short-range high-speed connections, while standalone optical modules offer flexibility and long-distance capability at higher cost and power. Choosing between DAC, AOC, and optical modules depends on distance, budget, power constraints, and network design requirements in data centers or HPC environments .
